Those of you who take an interest in my academic work may like to know that I am now a published author!

My paper ‘Pop and the Palästinalied: a crusade song revived at the turn of a new millennium’, which was awarded the prize for Best Paper by a Postgrad/Early Career Researcher at the 2022 conference of the Society for Study of the Crusades and Latin East, has now been published as a scholarly article by Taylor & Francis. It’s open access i.e. freely available for anyone to read here.

The article talks about how a medieval German crusade song has been reused and repurposed by modern musicians.

‘Like a one-woman Liz Fraser and Dead Can Dance all wrapped up in one interesting package…’

A review from Reflections of Darkness of Lindy-Fay Hella’s album and her show last month that also includes a fair few words about my performance. The audience is ‘patient’ and the reviewer is ‘intrigued’!

The stalwart folks at Chaos Theory (http://chaostheorymusic.co.uk/) have just shared a video of me doing a version of ‘Threes and Sevens’ in the church of St Bartholomew the Great, Smithfield, at the Hazel Iris album launch back in October. That night was definitely one the highlights of my year. From now on I think I will only play in twelfth-century churches, preferably ones with some of the original tile work still visible.* Thanks again to Hazel, to Chaos Theory and to Peter Junge for recording and mixing.

*possibly joking

I’ll be playing a pretty unique set at this event; ‘eccentric singer/storyteller’ Hazel Iris’ launch gig for her new album ‘Nine Sisters’. Hazel also performed at the Fear of the Forest show at London’s Strongroom in 2017; she was and is amazing. An unusual and atmospheric venue for this event; the medieval church of St Bartholomew in London. I don’t want to give away too much about the set I’m planning just yet, but it will be in keeping with the setting! I will be performing totally unplugged – no loop, no effects – so you can expect completely new and exclusive material. Other acts include an internationally acclaimed concert pianist, an operatic soprano and puppets (?!) so I really think this is one not to be missed.
